People's Budget Cleveland Monday delivered this stack of 10,000-plus signed petitions to City Hall. The group hopes to change Cleveland's charter to let residents decide how to spend some of the city budget.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Participatory-budgeting supporters delivered more than 10,000 signatures to Cleveland City Hall on Monday, clearing a hurdle that could allow the proposed charter amendment on this November’s ballot.
Organizers ended up delivering 10,582 signatures to City Council’s clerk, who, in the coming days, will send them to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. Those signatures still must be validated, though Molly Martin, campaign manager for People’s Budget Cleveland, said her group’s internal figures indicate their signatures will exceed the required threshold.
Council President Blaine Griffin shares those concerns, and was among the council members who opposed a participatory-budgeting pilot program pitched by Bibb earlier this year that would’ve used some of Cleveland’s federal aid to test out the idea .
