As Black History Month comes to a close, the Austin Parks and Recreation Board settled on a proposed new name for the Barton Springs Bathhouse.
It would honor an Austin woman whose acts of protest helped lead to its de-segregation in the 60s. As a teenager, Joan Means Khabele was among the first group of Black students to integrate Austin High School in the 50s.
“I remember her as a powerful force who was never afraid to share her opinion or speak her mind.” Grandchild Lesedi Khabele-Stevens said. “Without her efforts of desegregating Barton Springs, I wouldn’t be able to swim there today, and I’d appreciate it if you passed this in her honor because she was very strong and resilient.” Palesa Khabele-Stevens, another grandchild, said.
“I think that her bravery and her dedication in trying to right a wrong has made Austin a better place,” Villalobos said.During Monday's meeting, the board unanimously settled on Khabele.
