Property tax cut, more money for public safety in proposed Dallas city budget

Police officers’ overtime is proposed to be $42 million, up from $28 million set last fiscal year. The new proposed tally is made up of $33.9 million from the general fund and $8.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act money.

The city has been using federal COVID relief money to help supplement police and fire overtime costs since 2021. The police department estimates needing almost $45 million to cover overtime costs this fiscal year, according to budget documents.City officials for years have cited staffing shortages as a driving factor in high police and fire overtime costs and that the pandemic exacerbated issues.

“Once we get those individuals through training, we do anticipate that we’ll see some reductions in the fire department overtime,” Dallas Chief Financial Officer Jack Ireland toldon Thursday. “But it’s going to take getting those folks through the academy and trained and into the stations before we see that happen.”
