Any of us who are ourselves master procrastinators can see in Winbush’s behavior some familiar tells: her constant reliance on getting coffee and finding a snack as a way to delay working, the evasive, prolonging language of “yeah, that needs some thinking” or “I’m going to do some brainstorming.
And yet, we also tear our hair out in annoyance, nod along in agreement as the Hoorae producers try and try and try to get Winbush to address rudimentary problems in the production and are met with at first a stone wall and later a defensive petulance. The more benign parts of the process—casting, location scouting—are as interesting as ever.
The show arrives at perhaps the most precarious entertainment-industry era in decades, in the midst of an existential struggle for the industry’s viability and for its very soul. The story ofmay ultimately be a discrete one—most movies aren’t made as reality show experiments, after all—but it adds an extra sour note to an already plenty rotten Hollywood picture. Mayget it right the next time around, if there is one.
