The Viking cub: Grant Wonders took Viking by storm and became one of the most profitable analysts in history. Now, the 31-year-old is building Voyager Global into a juggernaut of his own.

. Trading at just $90 a share, the stock was down 20% for the year — and 32% off the $133-a-share high it had just hit in December — as concerns mounted over the strength of its content library, its cash burn, and its lackluster subscriber growth after a global expansion. Hedge funds were betting billions against it, making it one ofBut Wonders, an up-and-coming technology, media, and telecom analyst who cut his teeth at Blackstone, saw something others were missing.

In spring, after a short but lucrative run as a portfolio manager at Viking, the 31-year-old Wonders launched his own fund, Voyager Global, raising over $1 billion. He's picked up where he left off at Viking, returning nearly 14% through August, according to people familiar with the performance. Representatives for both Viking and Voyager declined to comment for this story. Wonders declined to comment.

In college, Wonders quickly gravitated toward investing, a natural outgrowth of that obsession. Despite the Wall Street stereotype, Wonders' self-confidence and intelligence don't manifest as cocky or aggressive behavior. And he isn't a flashy spender, either. He dresses plainly — for simplicity, he owns only one style of sock — doesn't have a car, and lives in the same one-bedroom Manhattan apartment he's had since he was a Viking analyst, sources told Insider.
