Principals group upset about CPS budget proposal: ‘Outraged at the callousness and neglect’

Chicago Public Schools said 40% of district-run schools will see their individual budgets stay the same or decrease in the fall, even though the district received record sums of federal money intended to help it recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Troy LaRaviere, president of the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association, said early results from a principal survey Friday found several schools will lose $50,000 or more, with some principals reporting losses of more than $100,000. CPS is slated to receive $2.8 billion in direct emergency pandemic relief funding over five fiscal years.about creating too many positions that the district can’t afford when the federal money runs out.

“We’re growing, and the budget reflects the fact that the diverse learners that are coming in are increasing and so the supports that we’ll have for them are there,” Patterson-Talley told reporters. “This year is a little bit different, where the supports we’re providing centrally are more robust, and they’ll be on top of the dollars that schools will receive in their own budgets,” he said.
