President Biden’s trip to Ukraine is the right message, but more military aid must follow | Opinion
President Joe Biden, center, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy talk during an unannounced visit in Kyiv, Ukraine, Monday, Feb. 20, 2023. President Joe Biden’s unannounced trip to Ukraine reinforces a stern, unambiguous message to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin: The Ukrainian fight for freedom is righteous, essential and will have the United States’ unwavering military and emotional support for its democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In her address at the Munich Security Conference, Harris said Russia is responsible for a “widespread and systematic attack” against Ukraine’s civilian population. Harris then cited evidence of execution-style killings, rape, torture and forceful deportations and other illegal, barbaric and inhumane acts against noncombatants.
Putin is not going to back down of his own volition or from rhetorical wrist slaps. Military and foreign policy experts warn that he is preparing for a major military offensive to continue an increasingly brutal war of attrition. U.S. officials also warn that China is actively considering providing weapons and ammunition to Russia, a potentially destabilizing intervention of an authoritarian in support of another authoritarian.
So far, public and congressional support here has held strong despite a handful of conservative members of Congress who foolishly want an end to U.S. military assistance to Ukraine. To the contrary, the Biden administration needs to pick up the pace and quality of assistance.
