“It’s hard to describe them,” said Justin Thornton of the this-season muses for Preen Line. “They are sort of a collective—although they would never call themselves a collective—who are an extended group of friends from different cities who support each other and help each other. There’s a DJ, a poet, a stylist…”
“...and an artist, a writer, and a photographer,” interjected his wife and design partner Thea Bregazzi. The designers said this real-world group of inspiring women in their 30s and 40s all share a post-1990s dress aesthetic spiked with the 1950s, and reminded them of a modern day, self-sufficient, hard-partying equivalent of the Bloomsbury set.
Thoughts of this mysterious creative sisterhood contaminated this Preen Line collection in many satisfying ways. There was the 1990s-esque blending of boudoir and badass in heavy silk double-layered slip dresses worn against raw-cut workwear and trenches in patched close-spun treated cotton. Checks, some a little lurid, were overprinted with the shadows of a crushed cellophane wrapper as if the pattern beneath was deadstock disinterred.
