This could have been an action born out of regret and remorse for his negative actions, but it shows that later in his life, and possibly after regeneration, he became more sentimental and soft.
In a special short released on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel, the Fourth Doctor is revealed to save Leela during the Time War, which likely could have only happened after his regeneration. He is also seen in the 50th special, "The Day of the Doctor," where he plays a mysterious curator who has a striking resemblance physically and in terms of personality to the Fourth Doctor.
