The reconstruction of flood-damaged Baldwin Boettcher Library is underway.
After nearly six years of closure because of damages inflicted by Hurricane Harvey, the Baldwin Boettcher Library in the Mercer Park area of Humble is under reconstruction. The projected reopening date is June 2024., the Baldwin Boettcher Library is set for a comeback as reconstruction is now underway.
“We asked the contractor to do an aggressive schedule on this project when it was put out for bid,” said Eric Heppen, senior project manager for the precinct. The architects for the project are Collaborate Architects, Developers, Project Managers. The construction contract was awarded to Frost Construction Company in March.After the library flooded, all interior materials and walls were removed, he said. The library was previously in Precinct 4 but due to redistricting in 2021, the library and botanic garden became part of Precinct 3’s territory.
“There’s literally nothing but a concrete slab for the floor right now but they’ll get new flooring,” he said. The building’s interior will resemble the previous library with some possible variations in flooring and paint. It will feature a children’s reading area, makers’ space, conference room, circulation space, and computer area. Once constructed, the building will be managed again by Harris County Public Library.
“We’re also adding a connecting walkway from the library to the Mercer campus to make it feel more inclusive,” he said.“Originally, it did take a year or two for FEMA to come to a settlement as to what the damages were and how much that was going to cost,” he said. Before redistricting, Precinct 4 staff were also seeking improvements but could never find the funds to make that happen.
