South suburban mayors such as Terry Wells of Phoenix say new Cook County infrastructure program that taps federal money is showing benefits.
While in its infancy, a Cook County program aimed at helping suburbs address long-standing infrastructure problems has already helped south suburban Phoenix, according to the village’s mayor. The Build Up Cook program is allocating $20 million in American Rescue Plan Act money to assist suburbs with infrastructure work, and has so far covered costs such as repairs to the Village Hall roof in Phoenix, a generator in Posen and water system repairs in Dixmoor.
The county also earmarked almost $360,000 to replace 32 fire hydrants installed in 1927, Podbielniak said. The county has allocated nearly $500,000 for projects in Posen. The idea for Build Up Cook began as “looking for innovative ideas to advance equity across the county,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
