After 14 years in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, popular brunch restaurant Aunt Mary's Cafe is calling it quits.broke the news that the Southern and Southwestern comfort food destination's last day in business would be Sunday, Nov. 6. Owner Ngan-Ha “Nu” Ho and her husband Jack Stewart first opened Aunt Mary's in 2008, but Stewart had to retire during the pandemic because of vulnerability to COVID-19.
Rather than continuing to run the restaurant by herself amid a difficult landscape of staffing challenges and inflation, Ho decided to get out while she could."It’s pretty tough. The last two years were very hard," Ho told SFGATE."The staffing issue, we had somebody, and then somebody would give their two weeks, it keeps going and it's just nonstop. ... I was like, 'I can't keep doing this.
Since announcing Aunt Mary's closure earlier this week, Ho said the response from customers has been overwhelming. "It’s been really busy," she said."... We should've said we were closing every week so we could be like this every week! Then we wouldn't have closed."
