Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Russian president will talk on Tuesday, but little movement is expected on the core issues dividing their countries.
By Carol Morello Carol Morello National reporter focusing on foreign policy and State Department Email Bio Follow May 13 at 4:11 PM Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will raise a host of issues dividing the United States and Russia when he meets Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but their conversation is expected to accomplish little beyond the airing of opposing views.
“We are not going to solve these issues overnight, but … we have to be engaging to create opportunities for progress,” a State Department official told reporters in advance of Pompeo’s departure. The official said they are taking a “realistic approach” to a full range of disagreements that have undermined U.S.-Russian relations.
Even as Pompeo arrived in Brussels, tensions in the Middle East surged again when Saudi Arabia said two of its oil tankers were attacked and damaged in an “act of sabotage.” Saudi officials did not say who was responsible, though Saudi Arabia and Iran are regional rivals. The trip to Sochi marks Pompeo’s first visit to Russia since becoming secretary of state and comes just weeks after the release of the Mueller report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
“Getting along with Russia and China, getting along with all of them is a very good thing, not a bad thing, it a good thing, it a positive thing,” Trump told reporters Friday.
