Nearly half of U.S. voters say the federal indictment against Donald Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents is politically motivated, but roughly the same percentage also say the former president should have been charged.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday shows that 47% said the charges are politically motivated, compared to 37% who said they are not political and 16% who were unsure.

Mr. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. He and his Republican allies on Capitol Hill characterize the 37-count indictment from a federal grand jury in South Florida as politically motivated. The survey showed that Mr. Trump continues to dominate the increasingly crowded 2024 Republican presidential primary, with 61% support, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as his nearest competitor, with 23% support.
