A social media post alleged there were no flu cases last year. After virtually disappearing during the COVID-19 pandemic’s height, influenza returned in the 2021-22 flu season, leading to 9 million illnesses.

Although influenza activity, which had essentially disappeared in the 2020-21 flu season, remained historically low in 2021-22, it’s wrong to say there were no cases worldwide last year. And there’s no evidence that influenza cases were wrongly being recorded as COVID-19.in 2020-21 was largely because of COVID-19 mitigation measures, such as social distancing, lockdowns, school closures and mask wearing put in place during the height of the pandemic., though not to levels seen in years past.
