Politics putting Texas mothers’ lives at risk | Opinion
Senators take the oath of office in the Senate Chamber at the Capitol on the first day of the 88th Legislative Session Tuesday January 10, 2023.The lives of low-income Texas mothers are at greater risk because the Texas Senate, led by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, has slowed down consideration of legislation from the Texas House as part of an ongoing feud with House Speaker Dade Phelan.
With the clock ticking on the legislative session, that could have real consequences for bills that need to pass, including. The bill would amend the state Human Resources Code to extend Medicaid coverage for women following a pregnancy from two months to 12 months. In Texas, being pregnant, poor and uninsured amplifies the danger that can come with pregnancy. Lack of access to health care is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the state. In 2013, the Senate created the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force, which has recommended expansion of postpartum care to one year to decrease incidents of maternal death. The task force’s most recentfound that 44% of the maternal deaths that occurred within the first year were 90% preventable.
Expanding postpartum care has been a top priority for Phelan, R-Beaumont, and Gov. Greg Abbott. Yet the bill that could get this done is languishing in the Senate.
