NEW: Police in Redwood City say the armed man they shot and killed during a suspected domestic violence incident Tuesday used the children as a shield.
The incident began around 3 p.m. when police received an unresponsive 911 call in which a woman was heard calling for her children, police said. They were able to track the call via a cell tower that indicated it came from the 1500 block of El Camino Real.
“Once the officers realized the man was armed with a handgun they backed off, a perimeter was set up and they attempted to negotiate with the man, he was inside the car with at least two of the children, age 1 and age 4 years old," said Redwood City police Chief Dan Mulholland. "The woman, who was 32 years old, was also inside the car with the man and the children."Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.
Three children were caught in the chaos and dozens were seen running for cover during a police shooting in Redwood City Tuesday. Stephanie Magallon reports.“At one point the man got out of the car with the firearm, several shots were fired by officers that were at the scene from different locations that surrounded that car,” Mulholland said.Police said the children were unharmed, and the woman suffered injuries unrelated to the shooting.
