Joe Bender, of Hawthorne, was hit about 8:45 p.m. in the area of Wagaraw Road and Passaic Street in Hawthorne, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes. Bender was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Valdes said. Detectives are searching for a gray 2004 Ford F-150 that fled the scene after the crash. The truck had New Jersey license plate W73-MCN, according to Valdes and Hawthorne Police Chief James W. Knepper.
