Police release video of man who died in custody after erratic behavior in City Heights [Breaking]

San Diego police on Wednesday released body-worn camera footage of a man who died in custody after behaving erratically in City Heights last week.

A San Diego officer found 35-year-old Daniel Armenta crawling in the street near a gas station about a block away, and told him to move to a sidewalk, police said. They said the officer believed the man may have been under the influence of drugs and called for paramedics. In video captured by the officer’s body-worn camera, Armenta — who can be heard mumbling and groaning — does not appear to resist as he is placed in handcuffs.

Police said Armenta answered a few questions before he fell unconscious and appeared to stop breathing. Paramedics arrived eight minutes after they were called and continued life-saving efforts, but Armenta died about 5 p.m., police said.
