A gripping scene unfolded on the streets of Los Angeles County as law enforcement Tuesday pursued a white transit van driven by a man allegedly involved in a hit-and-run in the downtown Los Angeles area.
The pursuit, lasting over 25 minutes, involved dangerous maneuvers, hit-and-runs, and near misses with pedestrians and deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The driver - who was believed to be under the influence - showed reckless behavior as the van made its way through East Los Angeles, running red lights and using parking lots to evade capture. At times the driver reached speeds of up to 70 mph on surface streets.
At one point, the driver appeared to intentionally drive toward a sheriff's deputy in their patrol car, narrowly missing them. That deputy got out of the way, but an ambulance was called to the scene where another deputy was reportedly hit by the suspect. The pursuit went onto the southbound 5 Freeway and then onto surface streets at Garfield and Gage avenues. At about 10:10 a.m., the suspect pulled into a business parking lot near Bickett and East 54th streets, stopped the van, and got out.
