NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that the explosions in Poland that claimed two lives were probably caused by a Ukrainian missile defending against Russian strikes.

BRUSSELS — The explosion in Poland that took place during a Russian missile barrage on Ukraine was not an attack, said the leaders of NATO and Poland on Wednesday, defusing fears of an escalation with Moscow.NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the blast, which claimed two lives, was probably caused by an errant Ukrainian air defense missile defending against the Russian strikes. Still, he stressed, Russia is to blame.

The remarks dovetailed with earlier comments from President Biden, who said that there was “plenty of evidence” to suggest that the missile was not fired from Russia. “This is the first time that citizens of a NATO country have been killed in a NATO country in this war,” said Michał Baranowski, director of the German Marshall Fund’s Warsaw office. “And this is a big deal.”“What it shows is the seriousness of Russian aggression and that its consequences go beyond Ukraine,” said Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, in an email to The Post.
