There was no truth to the statement of a Department of Justice (DOJ) official that former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag was a police officer, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday.

In a statement, the agency said Bantag, one of the alleged masterminds in the murder of veteran broadcaster Percival"Percy Lapid" Mabasa, has “never been a member” of the PNP.

It was in reaction to DOJ spokesman Mico Clavano’s statement earlier this week that Bantag was part of the police force. But the PNP stressed that “irrespective of one's rank, stature, or source of commissionship of any officer,” they would arrest any person who has violated the law.
