Whitmer participated in the proceedings via video, urging the judge to “impose a sentence that meets the gravity of the damage they have done to our democracy.” The recently re-elected Democrat went on to say, “A conspiracy to kidnap and kill a sitting governor of the state of Michigan is a threat to democracy itself,” before adding that she now scans crowds for threats and worries “about the fate of everyone near me.”
Whitmer’s 2022 rival, Tudor Dixon turned the kidnapping plot into a joke on the campaign trail this year. “The sad thing is that Gretchen will tie your hands, put a gun to your head and ask if you are ready to talk. For someone so worried about getting kidnapped, Gretchen Whitmer sure is good at taking business hostage and holding it for ransom,”
