This Broadway touring show features an all female-presenting and non-binary cast playing the roles of America's Founding Fathers
Playing a man, as Liz Mikel is doing in a bold new touring production of the musical “1776” — she’s Benjamin Franklin — is nothing new to her. In the past she has been cast as Matthew Harrison Brady in a staging of “Inherit the Wind” and as the stage manager in “Our Town.” She has also portrayed Texas statesman Sam Houston and sixth U.S. President John Quincy Adams.
Mikel remembers that whirlwind: “I got there on Tuesday, went shopping and filled my refrigerator up on Wednesday. Thursday we got the call that the governor was shutting down any large groups. Friday I was on a flight heading back to Dallas .”“I knew what a multifaceted man he was, but I had no idea he was a chess master. I used that — the fact that he was a chessmaster and was always strategizing and seeing things three or four moves ahead — in my characterization.
