Plans for a development on the largest tract of undeveloped land in Helotes is the latest battle line in the dispute between residents who want to retain the city’s rural feel and developers who see San Antonio’s far Northwest Side as prime for growth.
The project, which is still in its planning stages and would require further City Council approval, is across the street from aMayor Rich Whitehead said the decision to OK the San Antonio developer’s project represents a compromise between previous unpopular proposals for the site — which included filling the 31 acres with big-box stores.
In the early 2000s, a plan to build a Walmart at the intersection was rejected. At the time, residents worried about the environmental consequences. Among them was the concern that high levels of pavement would exacerbate the threat of degraded flood water coming down Helotes Creek during heavy rain.
City officials say issues such as traffic and drainage problems will be hashed out in later iterations of the project.
