Within hours of the Pierce County Council approving a new shelter option for the homeless, the county executive said he would not sign off on it.
A city-sanctioned tent city in Tacoma called Forging Path Community has already had eight people transition into housing since it opened in mid-November.
This comes as there has been heated pushback from neighbors who have made it clear they do not want tent encampments or other temporary shelters in their neighborhood. However, County Executive Bruce Dammeier said some options are more affordable and include public input.
It's one way Councilmember Jani Hitchen explained the county can offer housing amid a shelter crisis. Data shows there are 2,661 homeless people in the county and only 1,726 shelter beds. She said the county needs a solution now and should not wait for the county executive’s preferences, which he outlined in his budget. She said the council has the option to override the veto, though it was unclear whether that would happen.Dammeier informed the council he intends to veto the ordinance.
