Turbulent flows take on a surprising spin in an experiment inspired by the Earth’s core. A team of physicists has discovered a new role for a specific type of turbulence—a finding that sheds light on fluid flows ranging from the Earth’s liquid core to boiling water. The research, which appears
Physicists have discovered a new aspect of turbulent convection, demonstrating that it can cause a freely moving solid within the fluid to rotate in two directions, sometimes switching due to turbulence. This research, which has implications for understanding fluid flows from Earth’s core to boiling water, also highlights the key role thermal convection might play within the Earth and the potential for turbulence to be controlled by interaction with solids.
A recent experimental study, inspired by the super-rotation of the Earth’s solid core, shows when turbulence flows contained in a cylinder interact with a free body a surprisingly smooth rotation is observed.
