The first calls came into 911 at 5:07pm, according to Anne-Marie Braswell of Northwest Fire District. Firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy fire involvement in several units and immediately upgraded to a second alarm. Nearly 45 firefighters in 16 units from Tucson, Northwest and Golder Ranch arrived to fight the blaze, which was finally called under control at 6:15pm.
One neighbor said she heard three loud"thumps" and heavy black smoke filled the air, making it extremely difficult to see. Sixteen apartment units were affected.
