After hesitating to act in December, the Phoenix City Council voted 5-4 on Wednesday to auction off forfeited guns it's required by state law to sell.
City officials planned to ask the council to approve a contract with Sierra Tactical Auctions two months ago butThe delay resulted in a narrower auction contract. Phoenix will only sell the forfeited firearms state law says they must. The rest will go into storage.
As a result of the narrowed contract, about 1,900 guns now in police possession will be stored in the police Property Management Bureau, Wilson said. However, Gallego said,"I think it's important — as a body that makes ordinances — to follow laws and follow court orders even when we disagree with them."
