London designer Phoebe English discusses how her team is coping with the coronavirus in London and how she hopes to use her skills and resources to help the medical community.
. Instead of ordering fabrics from all over the world, she makes her collections with deadstock and surplus material sourced from her designer peers in London, including Simone Rocha, Martine Rose, and Katharine Hamnett. Here, she discusses how her team is working through the coronavirus outbreak in London, and how she hopes to use her skills and resources to help the medical community.
After thinking about it really carefully over the weekend, I decided on Monday that my team would stop coming into the studio. I was here [on Monday], and it felt so frightening for everyone to commute—I had to go to a meeting, and I felt so scared on public transport. It just didn’t feel fair to expect my staff to do that. I feel so much relief knowing they are all at home, safe and contained. It’s a really good feeling as an employer.
But, the main priority is the health of everyone. And we have equipment here [like sewing machines] that could be used to make things that are needed, like face masks for the medical professions that have depleting stocks. These masks can’t be worn continuously, they’re meant to be single use, and the medical community is getting through them really quickly.
[By next season] I don’t think things will go back to normal. This is an unprecedented situation, and I don’t think any of us will come out of this feeling normal at all. There’s now a lot of evidence that people who were quarantined for 60 days are coming out of it with quite severe PTSD, and how that will affect entire nations that have to quarantine… We just don’t know.
