Before they were famous, Staten Island natives Pete Davidson and Colin Jost grew up riding the Staten Island Ferry.The “Saturday Night Live” cast members along with comedy club owner Paul Italia cast the winning bid for a decommissioned Staten Island ferryboat during a city auction that closed Wednesday, Mr. Italia said. A spokeswoman for NBCUniversal confirmed Mr. Jost and Mr. Davidson’s involvement with the project. The group plans to turn the ship into a floating entertainment venue.
“The idea is to turn the space into a live entertainment event space with comedy, music, art, food,” Mr. Italia said. New York City tourists may best know the Staten Island Ferry as a free boat ride that offers views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. But it is also an important mass-transportation option for Staten Island residents commuting into Manhattan and typically carries about 75,000 riders each weekday, according to the city.
