The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning for Darwin’s Natural Pet Products raw cat food, telling customers not to feed their pets two different products from the company. The warning comes after the detection of Salmonella strains in stool samples from a customer’s kittens. However, this is not a product recall for the time being. Moreover, the company is disputing the FDA’s warning, claiming the pet food in question is safe to eat.on August 5th.
The FDA received a report of illness in three kittens in a single household. The pets consumed the food and developed diarrhea. A stool sample from one of the kittens tested positive for Salmonella. Image source:Any pet food contaminated with bacteria like Salmonella. Pets do not always display symptoms after contracting the pathogen. But if they do, they can develop vomiting, diarrhea , fever, loss of appetite, and decreased energy.
“We believe the FDA’s request is wholly unnecessary; there are no pet health risks to address,” the memo reads. “We also believe the FDA’s request is based on flawed regulatory decision-making and have taken steps to make our position clear with the agency.” The company continued, “Nonetheless, the food samples were flagged under the FDA’s zero-tolerance policy, which is largely designed for human safety and for food that humans will consume, not pets.”
