We chat with YoungJustice writer Paul Giacoppo about his work on the latest DC Showcase short, KamandiTheLastBoyOnEarth, now available from WBHomeEnt :
The underexplored worlds of Jack Kirby are getting their due with the new DC Showcase shorts collection, which includes Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth!.
I couldn't agree more, that one was hysterical. This whole showcase was really quite the amazing collection of shorts. I know you've worked throughout the animated comic book genre for a while now, but how did your involvement with Kamandi come about? You've written shorts before. Would you say that paring down the world for this short was your biggest challenge on this?
Since you did pull so much from that issue, what was it like trying to craft these tense action sequences around all of that character development? Paul Giacoppo: These stories almost always start with myself and a story editor of a TV show or producer or executive, and we're just focusing on the story. Because there was already a visual design here, it had already been mentioned and talked about that we're going to try to make each of these shorts, especially this one, look as much like the original inspired artwork as possible. So it doesn't just tell a story that's like it, but it looks like the art style from it.
Since you do mention that, do you think your storytelling would have changed at all with your own firsthand experience of an event like that?
