After Picard's series finale aired in April 2023, Terry Matalas went on record to discuss some of the things he regretted not being able to feature in the show, including the lack of romance in season 3 specifically. Although there were multiple opportunities for more romantic subplots, whether between Picard and Crusher or the series resident couple Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker , season 3 kept its focus on the overarching action and plot.
Unfortunately, this scene was never shot due to scheduling conflicts, and the actual final scene of Picard season 3 featured the former USS Enterprise-D crew enjoying a celebratory drink and game of poker. While the poker game was meaningful in a different way, as a call-back to Star Trek: TNG's finale, Stewart's preferred ending would have kept the focus on Picard and helped to remedy the lack of romance in season 3.
Why Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Was Such An Unromantic Season As it was, Picard season 3 remained an unromantic season to the last, choosing to feature action and adventure rather than interpersonal drama. Given that the season's plot was complicated, and the end goal of having Picard and the Enterprise-D crew finally destroy the Borg was important, it's not surprising that season 3 needed to sacrifice romance to make everything work.
