Passenger killed when truck spills debris onto SUV on freeway near Clairemont ID'd [Breaking]
A 72-year-old woman killed last week on a freeway near Clairemont when construction materials fell out of a pickup and landed on her vehicle has been identified.
Karen Cooper, of La Jolla, was fatally injured May 26. She was a passenger in a a Mercedes-Benz SUV that was traveling east on state Route 52 around 1 p.m., when a truck carrying concrete bags and other materials lost control on a transition road from south Interstate 805, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP spokesman Samuel Mendoza said the truck overturned and sent several bags of concrete and construction debris over the side of a wall and onto the lanes of east SR-52 below.A bag of cement crashed through the windshield of the SUV, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash, Mendoza said.
