Latino documentary photographer, Joe Robles celebrates his first solo gallery showcase alongside his friends, family and community on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, Strawberry Park Pavillion in Pasadena.A photography exhibition at a public park, with skateboarders popping manuals in front of the artwork, isn't every artist's first choice for a gallery space. But to host his first showcase in any other way would have been antithetical to Joe Robles' purpose as a photographer.
Robles, 24, first began exploring photography as a teenager, using his phone to take photos of the sunset from his roof before begging his mother to buy him his first camera. He dabbled briefly in concert photography for an independent online publication called"713 Magazine," but drew the most meaning from the photos he took of friends, family and daily life in his hometown.
"It's something that's always come natural to him," said the photographer's uncle, Joseph Robles."He's passionate about this, so we're just proud to be here and be a part of this because this is a great opportunity for him." One teenage boy, 17-year-old Manuel Vasquez, is featured in a group photo of young skaters looking thoughtfully into the camera under the Strawberry Pavilion roof. The photo imparts the camaraderie and good-natured rebelliousness inherent to skateboarding and demonstrates the power of a photographer who understands the community he serves.
