A Senate-passed bill would allow a registered Pennsylvania voter to serve as a poll watcher in any polling place around the state and not limit them to being from the county where the polling place is located.
Rep. Dawn Keefer, R-York County, spoke in support of a bill lifting the county residency requirement on partisan poll watchers that was passed by the House State Government Committee on Wednesday. Critics argued allowing poll watchers unfamiliar to voters and poll workers at a polling place could lead to intimidation. June 22, 2022 Screenshot from Pa.
It also would increase the number of poll watchers a candidate can have at each precinct to three from the current limit of two. The measure from Mastriano, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, also permits poll watchers to be inside the polling place but they are not permitted to interfere with the counting of ballots.
Rep. Dawn Keefer, R-York County, urged her colleagues on the House committee to support the bill. She said it ensures consistency in rules regarding poll watchers across all polling places and provides more transparency by increasing their number to three.
