Exactly 40 years ago this month popular comic book and collectible store North Coast Nostalgia opened its Ridge Road doors and instantly became the place for all things pop culture in Parma.
Someone who remembers discovering the store as an elementary-age kid is Parma native Adam J. Barsa, who now owns the Polish Village store.
“When I worked here in high school I became family. It hasn’t changed a whole lot. That’s what I like about it. This is definitely my dream job.”North Coast Nostalgia was opened by Dave and Gayle Kapelka. The couple ran the store for 36 years. Then four years ago they sold it to Barsa, who at that time had been managing it for six years.
What’s interesting about North Coast Nostalgia is it belies the current retail trend toward online sales over brick-and-mortar locations. “I’ll tell you what, when we were locked down the first week we were open were my highest sales that didn’t involve a sale,” Barsa said. “I think people right now want their entertainment but they also need some escapism.
