makes history as the very first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film also won the Best Screenplay and Best International Film categories. And director Bong Joon-Ho also bagged the title of Best Director, beating Hollywood legends — filmmakers he's admired his whole life — Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese.
These awards are also the very first Oscars ever received by South Korea, and are a huge milestone for foreign filmmakers everywhere. "Thank you. After winning best international feature, I thought I was done for the day and was ready to relax," Bong said, in shock after he won the directorial category."Thank you so much. When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is that 'the most personal is the most creative.' That quote is from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese's films.
"When people in the U.S. were not familiar with my films, Quentin always put my films on his list. He's here, thank you so much. Quentin, I love you. And Todd and Sam, great directors that I admire." The Oscar Award winner joked,"If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw, split the award into five and share it with all of you."
He concluded his speech with the perfect statement."Thank you. I will drink until next morning, thank you."for their work and artistry in films.
