Get an exclusive look at paper_jackets' music video for Girl
Los Angeles' Paper Jackets made the video for its single "Girl" -- premiering exclusively below -- as a kind of gambit to "get further along in our relationships with professionals to do a better video," according to frontman James Mason. But the synth-pop sextet wound up being perfectly happy with the clip, which matches the song's ebullient tone with garish surroundings and brisk visual cuts.
"It has this sort of endearing, nice, homemade touch," Mason tells Billboard. "You can tell we were trying to make this on our own, with limited resources. But it has certain charms that are maybe different than other videos that have a bigger budget. And we had some really awesome people that were on board, a lot of friends showing up to hold cameras and help us out. It was really cool and Hollywood-esque.
The "Girl" clip was filmed in one day at a pink, dollhouse-themed home the group found in L.A. that Mason feels embellishes the spirit of the song. "It was crazy," he says. "We were there really late, past when we paid for, and they were like, 'You need to leave now.' We had hired some camera people on top of other friends with their cameras, but we hired them under false pretenses, like 'Oh, we're only gonna be there for an hour or two.
