SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan — After barely two years of operation, the Eye Tissue Retrieval Center of the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) here now has the second highest number of corneal harvest in the country.
SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan — After barely two years of operation, the Eye Tissue Retrieval Center of the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital here now has the second highest number of corneal harvest in the country.Dr. Cipriano Fernandez, PPH chief of hospital, said that since it started operations on May 5, 2023, the center has already collected 17 corneal tissues.He said an eye tissue retrieval center in Nueva Ecija province has the highest corneal harvest. He did not give a number.
Fernandez said that among the eyes' parts only the cornea may be transplanted. He said that the cornea is carefully retrieved from the eyes in not more than 12 hours from a dead person.This is why it is very important to first seek permission from the dead person's relatives, said Fernandez.Dr. Satur Valentin, PPH ophthalmologist, said that after the cornea is harvested it should be transplanted within seven days.
