Panama will not allow Canada’s First Quantum to expand the area of its existing copper mining operations, the deputy environment minister told, stressing the government’s opposition to what it said was a request from the firm for more land.
Laguna said First Quantum had reforested only a small fraction of the required land and noted it had five pending judicial cases centered on environmental concerns. The mine is an important asset for both parties, accounting for about 3.5% of Panama’s gross domestic product and about half of First Quantum’s 2021 core earnings.

Quantum Safe Cryptography – A Quantum Leap Needed NowCryptography is the fundamental building block on which our digital lives are based relying on one critical assumption – that the current encryption is unbreakable by even the most powerful computers in existence. But what if that assumption was not only challenged but realistically compromised?

Casimir Self-Interaction Energy Density of Quantum Electrodynamic FieldsQuantum electrodynamic fields possess fluctuations corresponding to transient particle-antiparticle dipoles, which can be characterized by a nonvanishing polarizability density. Here, we extend a recently proposed quantum scaling law to describe the volumetric and radial polarizability density of a quantum field corresponding to electrons and positrons and derive the Casimir self-interaction energy (SIE) density of the field, ${\overline{E}}_{\mathrm{SIE}}$, in terms of the fine-structure constant. The proposed model obeys the cosmological equation of state $w=\ensuremath{-}1$ and the magnitude of the calculated ${\overline{E}}_{\mathrm{SIE}}$ lies in between the two recent measurements of the cosmological constant $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ obtained by the Planck Mission and the Hubble Space Telescope.

One-Electron Quantum Cyclotron as a Milli-eV Dark-Photon DetectorWe propose using trapped electrons as high-$Q$ resonators for detecting meV dark photon dark matter. When the rest energy of the dark photon matches the energy splitting of the two lowest cyclotron levels, the first excited state of the electron cyclotron will be resonantly excited. A proof-of-principle measurement, carried out with one electron, demonstrates that the method is background free over a 7.4 day search. It sets a limit on dark photon dark matter at 148 GHz (0.6 meV) that is around 75 times better than previous constraints. Dark photon dark matter in the 0.1--1 meV mass range (20--200 GHz) could likely be detected at a similar sensitivity in an apparatus designed for dark photon detection.

Using Artificial Intelligence To Tame Quantum SystemsMachine learning drives the self-discovery of pulses that stabilize quantum systems in the face of environmental noise. Controlling the trajectory of a basketball is relatively straightforward, as it only requires the application of mechanical force and human skill. However, controlling the movemen
