A little snow was no problem for the two Alaskan champions at the 61st running of the historic marathon.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Fall was on its last legs at the annual Equinox Marathon in Fairbanks on Saturday.
But the snow and grueling 3,200-foot elevation gain was no problem for the two Alaskan champions — Tracen Knopp of Palmer and Shalane Frost of Fairbanks — at the 61st running of the historic marathon. ”The snow on top of Ester Dome — it was chilly and sloppy,” Knopp said. ”While it would have been nice to have some dry trails today because it could have been faster, I felt like I was prepared well enough for some wet trails because that is what I run in a lot of the time.”
Knopp’s running resume includes a 100-kilometer race in Arizona earlier this year, so while most other competitors paced themselves throughout the 42K of the Equinox Marathon, he had to kick it up a gear.
