Israel says the militant groups are part of the Iranian “axis of resistance.” Both groups receive funding and other support from Iran, but they are deeply rooted in Palestinian society. Palestinian security forces have reported the deaths of two men in the crackdown: a 19-year-old civilian, Rabhi Shalabi, shot riding a motorcycle, and an Islamic Jihad militant, Yazi Jaayseh.
It was not immediately clear why the Palestinian Authority decided to launch the crackdown now.
