Jennifer Tejada is an improbable Silicon Valley chief executive, but she hopes to be a template for a different future.
“Let’s celebrate advances and gains,” says Tejada, who cut her teeth at Procter & Gamble Co. PG, -0.82% before stints at several tech companies including Keynote Systems, where she was CEO. “Inclusion is not a strategic initiative. Inclusion is a strategic imperative. A winning team approach Her team-oriented sensibility extends to PagerDuty, where a collective effort is acknowledged, unlike the star system at many tech companies, which tend to pit individuals against one another. The formula seems to be a winning one. Last month, the San Francisco-based company reported a 49% jump in fiscal first-quarter revenue to $37.3 million, quelling some doubts investors may have about business fundamentals after PagerDuty’s spectacular debut on April 11.
Says PagerDuty board member Zach Nelson, co-founder of NetSuite, which was sold to Oracle Corp. ORCL, +0.71% for $9.3 billion in 2016: “She’s identified the next-generation of IT operations management. It used to take hours, if not days, to repair or replace parts. Now, things get fixed in real time.”
Companies like PagerDuty — with roots in cloud computing and a subscription-based model — are part of what Tejada calls the “future of work” industry, a category in which she includes Zoom, Slack, Twilio Inc. TWLO, +0.76% Okta Inc. OKTA, +0.16% and Box Inc. BOX, -0.80% Like her male counterparts in charge of those companies, Tejada is socially conscious and willing to work together in some capacity.
