Michael King showing no signs of slowing in first season as full-time starting pitcher; Yu Darvish on track for return next homestand; Jurickson Profar talks ‘reward’ of All-Star game
PHILADELPHIA — Michael King will start Tuesday against the Phillies and after that will probably be another two or three starts from setting a new career high in innings pitched.
He has his own theory about the transition he has made. It was an argument he would make to the Yankees as they continually put a cap on his innings no matter how successful he was starting. Lugo arrived in San Diego having not thrown more than 80 innings any of the previous four seasons while working almost exclusively out of the bullpen. He made 26 starts for the Padres, throwing 146⅓ innings, more than double his 65 innings for the Mets in 2022.
Darvish, who last pitched on May 29 and was placed on the injured list with a left groin strain, had said he expected to be able to return after throwing 60 pitches in the bullpen Friday in New York. “The All-Star game would be cool,” he said. “The work that I put in, the reward. … For me, it’s team first. To finally reach a point where I’m doing a lot to help the team every day is rewarding.”Profar is one of three Padres players in position to make the National League roster for the July 16 game in Arlington, Texas.
