Jackson Merrill joined an historic group Wednesday, becoming the fourth-youngest opening-day center fielder in MLB since 1969. As he has been all spring, the 20-year-old who finished last season at Double-A was hardly impressed. “I'm not really a guy that kind of takes stuff and it sinks in,” Merrill said before the Padres’ 5-2 loss to the Dodgers.

'I just put all the effort into what they asked me to do,' he said before the game. '… I've been focusing on getting better at the position — getting them to trust me at the position. The biggest part of this game is trust. … I feel like they put a lot of trust in me to play out there and play well out there too, not just kind of take care of it for now. They want me to play out there and do my best, put every bit of effort I have into it.
