Rookie has 'low-grade strain' in elbow; plan is to throw in two weeks, but he could eventually be shut down for season
Rookie left-hander MacKenzie Gore will not require surgery but instead will be shut down for a time.
“Structurally, everything looked pretty good in there compared to the past,” manager Bob Melvin said. “Low-grade strain, and I think we caught a break as far as that goes. Won’t throw baseball for a couple of weeks, and then once we get him back ramped up, we’ll see where he’s at.” “I don’t know what the reality is as far as him pitching,” Melvin said. “But I’m just happy that we didn’t get bad news as far as that went. If everything went smoothly, there’s a chance he could show up at some point in time in September. But that’s getting way ahead of ourselves right now.”Gore, 23, walked off the mound Monday in Detroit flexing his fingers after feeling discomfort in his throwing elbow during the fifth inning of a loss to the Tigers.
CJ Abrams took grounders and threw from the shortstop position Friday and was expected to be available off the bench. Abrams has not played since last Friday due to biceps soreness.
