Manny Machado still hoping to avoid IL, but hairline fracture in left hand is his first broken bone ever; Padres will assess his status after Thursday's off-day
watched a loss from the bench with a hoodie on. The Padres remain hopeful that their $350 million third baseman can avoid the injured list and do his part to turn around an underachieving team, but a closer look at his left hand unveiled a new complication:“It’s definitely a tough stretch for us,” Machado said after sliding a brace over his left hand. “Definitely want to be out there and try to help this team win in whatever way and it’s just a bummer — bummer.
“It just depends on how he responds to it,” Melvin said of the possibility of Machado playing through the break in his hand. “Any time you have a fracture in there, it’s painful. It’s just kind of where it is and how he feels. We’re trying to give him a few more days to see what our decision is on that. He wasn’t going to play . He wasn’t going to play the off-day either way. We’ll just see where we are once we come back.
The break in the hand, of course, presents new variables: Machado has never broken a bone before and strength loss to structural damage — think gripping a bat — is different than pushing through pain, especially for a hitter already off to a disappointing .231/.282/.372 start to the season. “I mean it’s just as much as my body can take,” Machado said. “I mean, you can go out there and perform at the highest level that we need me performing. If it’s two days, if it’s a week, if it’s two weeks or six weeks, whatever. I’m not sure how my body is going to heal. Just take it day by day, see what it is and hopefully come back after this off-day and it’s a lot better, and then maybe I’m back in the lineup.
