Padres need a couple more starting pitchers, believe they need to fill at least one from the outside; Yu Darvish commits to play for Japan in WBC
The Padres are evidently in the mix for Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga and have been linked to other free agent starters.They have four bona fide starting pitchers in Yu Darvish, Nick Martinez, Joe Musgrove and Blake Snell. They feel it is imperative to add at least one veteran to that group.But they also want to find pitchers in their system that can be reliable options on at least a semi-regular basis.
Morejón, who was in the rotation at the start of 2021 before undergoing Tommy John surgery and pitching out of the bullpen when he returned last season, is the leading contender to be a sixth starter or swing man. Others who will get opportunities in spring training are Pedro Avila, Jay Groome, Reiss Knehr and Ryan Weathers.
The strong start to ’22 by MacKenzie Gore allowed the Padres to use a six-man rotation from the end of April to mid-July. They were one of just three teams to have seven starters make at least seven starts before July 5 and one of 11 to have at least five starters throw 52 innings or more to that point.
The Orix Buffaloes will post the 29-year-old outfielder at 5 a.m. Wednesday. Teams must reach a deal with Yoshida by 5 p.m. Jan. 20 if he is going to leave Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball for the majors. The left-handed-hitting Yoshida led the Pacific League the last two years in OPS and is coming off a season in-which he paired 21 homers and 89 RBIs with a .336/.449/.559 batting line in helping Orix win their first Japan Series title in 26 years. The United States team is awaiting word on Martinez, Musgrove and Snell regarding their participation.
